Based on a review of literature pertaining to governmental policies affecting the work-family context, and data gathered from focus group discussions, this paper highlights how the Indian context is marked by high non-institutional and low-institutional support for working women. Further, the paper delves more deeply into the sources of non-institutional support, namely: Support from spouse, friends, relatives and neighbors and paid help / maids, and examines, based on preliminary data, the relationships between these sources and their impact on work-family conflict in India.
