International Education/Modern Languages Week 2009

Join us for the following activities during International Education week and Modern Languages week, November 16-20.

Monday, November 16

“Recent Trends in Latin American Music”, with Professor Daniel Party
Noon - 1 p.m. - Moreau 114

Are you interested in learning more about recent Latin American and Latino musicians like Shakira, Juanes, Calle 13, and Julieta Venegas?
In this presentation Dr. Party will use several hit songs from the past five years to provide insights into contemporary Latin America and the Latino communities in the United States, particularly regarding issues of national identity, cultural hybridity, recent immigration trends, and gender.

Passport Application/Passport Photo Day
4:30-5:30 p.m. in Stapleton Lounge

All students, faculty, and staff who would like to apply for a passport or get a passport photo taken for free are invited to participate in the Passport Application/Passport Photo Day. There will be information on how to apply for a passport and a local studio, Images Unlimited, (tretheweyimaging.com) will be available to take a FREE passport photo. Prizes will be awarded on the completion of the passport application process (more information will be provided at the event).

Intercultural Learning Showcase
7:00 -9:00 p.m. in Stapleton Lounge

All students are welcome to attend the 2009 Intercultural Learning Showcase to learn about recent study abroad returnees' international and intercultural learning experiences. Students will share their study abroad stories, interaction with local people in different cultural contexts, and reflect on some critical questions related to study abroad: who am I, what are my passions, to what am I called and how can I make a positive difference in the world?
CWIL student travel grants for study abroad will be discussed at the event. There is mandatory attendance for 2008-2009 (Fall 2008, Spring 2009, Summer 2009) CWIL travel grant recipients as well as students wishing to apply for 2010-2011 (Summer 2010, Fall 2010, Spring 2011) CWIL travel grants.
The winners of the 2009 study abroad photo, essay, and video contests will be announced.

Tuesday, November 17

"Music and Dance Around the World" Modern Languages Recital
7:30 - 9 pm - Haggar Parlor.

The Departments of Modern Languages, Music, and Dance will cohost a showcase of performing arts. Students will perform a variety of songs in different languages as well as dances and musical instruments. Following the performance, international food and refreshments will be served.

Wednesday, November 18

Student Panel on International Internships
Noon - 1:00 p.m., Student Center, Conference Room C

Have you ever been interested in completing an internship abroad? Curious about what it would be like? Then come to the Internship Abroad Panel and hear from past interns in London and Germany. Each student will share her experience of life abroad as well as their professional experience in various fields from publishing, human resources, finance, marketing, and other areas. This will be a time to have your questions answered if you are thinking about participating in the Internships abroad program. See you there!

"Human Resource Management in Expatriate Assignments"

In this session we look at the challenges and pitfalls of selecting and training managers for expatriate assignments by studying the case of ASIMCO, one of the largest foreign investors in China in the 1990s.

"Bridge on Misunderstanding" , International Student Panel
5:30 - 6:30 p.m.- Vander Vennet Theatre

The Around the World Club is hosting an International Student Panel to focus on misunderstandings that American students have on foreign countries. Five panelists, representing five different countries, will present on the culture and life of their countries. The panelists are Chen Chen (presenting China), Shwe Yee (presenting Burma), Cristina Posadas (presenting Mexico), Amira El-Serafy (presenting Egypt), and Min Hee Lee (presenting South Korea). After the presentation, students will be able to ask any questions related to those countries.

Thursday, November 19

Internationalization Lab
Noon - 1:00 p.m., Student Center, Warner Conference Room

Join us to learn more about internationalization efforts across Saint Mary's campus. Members of the Internationalization Lab team, Jill Vihtelic, Professor Business Administration and Economics, and Tom Fogle, Professor, Biology will present.
