Monday, October 13
Time:  Noon
Location: Le Mans Hall, Stapleton Lounge

What keeps teachers going - in spite of everything? This question was the basis for Sonia Nieto's inquiry with a group of veteran Boston Public School high school teachers. In this talk, she will describe the research she did with the group, as well as some of their conclusions concerning the motivations, staying power, and resilience of teachers who work with students of diverse backgrounds under conditions that sometimes test their resolve.

Sonia Nieto is Professor Emerita of Language, Literacy, and Culture, School of Education at the University of Massachusetts.  Dr. Nieto's scholarly work has focused on multicultural and bilingual education, curriculum reform, teacher education, Puerto Rican children's literature, and the education of Latinos, immigrants, and other culturally and linguistically diverse student populations.

Cosponsored by CWIL and the Multicultural Services and Student Programs office.
