Nicholas Kristof, Pulitzer Prize-winning Journalist

Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Nicholas Kristof will present the first annual Sister Alma Peter, CSC lecture, Monday, February 8, 2010 at 7 p.m. in O'Laughline Auditorium. Mr. Kristof will speak about his recent book Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide.  The book just came out in September, and is receiving much positive press attention. The New York Times Magazine published an essay adapted from this book in advance in August called The Women's Crusade. His talk will focus on what can be done to support women and girls in the developing world. www.halftheskymovement.org/

Mr. Kristof has reported for The New York Times since 1984, writing an op-ed column since November 2001, and his columns have often focused on global health, poverty and gender issues in the developing world. He is widely known for bringing to light human rights abuses in Asia and Africa, such as Tiananmen Square, human trafficking and the Darfur conflict, and for being among the first to raise doubts about weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. He has lived on four continents, reported on six, and traveled to 140 countries, plus all 50 states, every Chinese province and every main Japanese island. Mr. Kristof and his wife, Sheryl WuDunn, also a Pultizer Prize-winning journalist, are also authors of China Wakes: The Struggle for the Soul of a Rising Power, and Thunder from the East: Portrait of a Rising Asia.

The lecture is open to the public.  Admission is free. Tickets are required.
