In this talk, Professor Torres will address the relationship between everyday life, carnival, and institutional politics at the southern outskirts of Europe. Drawing on ethnographic research from the North African Spanish exclave of Ceuta, he will explore the manner in which carnival performances have been transformed by some Christians to resist and protest the increasing political power of Ceuta's Muslim minority.
He will argue that the tension between carnival and multicultural politics in Ceuta reveals hidden liberal democratic polemics that are also present in Western Europe and the U.S. As such, Ceuta's multicultural struggles are an ideal site for reflection about the future of race politics.
