Catalyst Retreat "Women Fighting for Change"
October 14-19

A transformative intercultural experience

Learn how local historical leaders found creative ways to promote justice
Work with community women, Saint Mary's faculty, and students
Travel to Cincinnati Ohio to visit: National Underground Railroad Freedom Center, the home of Harriet Beecher Stowe who started a national debate, home of John Rankin, a Quaker who was an abolitionist, home of John Parker, an African American who was an abolitionist
Tour historic local neighborhoods that were the scene of social change
Integrate the experience with group activities and discussions
Formulate an action plan for women to become a catalyst for social change

 

Required Readings

Prior to our trip, please read the following excerpts from:

An Introduction to Uncle Tom's Cabin, by Henry Louis Gates, Jr. (pdf)

Mightier Than The Sword, by David S. Reynolds (pdf)

and the following chapters from Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl by Harriet A. Jacobs

Program Details

COST: $50, * all expenses included

BEGINS: Saint Mary's College, Friday, October 14 at 5:00 pm

TRAVEL: Cincinnati, Friday to Sunday afternoon

RETREAT: Michiana Christian Serivce Camp, Sunday to Wednesday afternoon

ENDS: Saint Mary's College, Wednesday, October 19, 5:00 pm
